Menstruation While Breastfeeding - Just Got My Period Back!

Yesterday night, had some spotting. I thought it was like what I had 3 weeks back but this morning, it continued just like that of a normal period. So I can say, it's back now... Thanks be to God! Glad no more guessing just like last time when I had some spotting if I'm preggo or not. :) To mark this stage, at present, my baby's around 10 months.

I was a bit surprised as I didn't have any symptoms that it was coming today. Though three weeks back with my spotting, I was not really feeling well and had mistakenly thought that I was preggo due to the symptoms I had though the thought of having my period back also came to my mind.

I also remember that time, my breast milk supply decreased for few days that I was so worried that I am losing my milk but glad it went back to normal after like 2-3 days afterwards. I would love to continue breastfeeding my baby as long as I can, thank God that up to present all is well for both of us when it comes to his milk feedings from me.

I have made some reading about this as I am still on exclusive breastfeeding as I am just wondering though my little one was introduced to solids when he turned exactly six months. I read that's the average time that your period will come back when he is starting to eat solids. Though I can say I am still round the clock of feeding him at daytime, also at night like 2-3 feedings and also no pacifier, I feed him too, for comfort at all times when he needs it and I believed these were some factors that contributes for not having your period back on the other hand.

So to share, these were the details I got about this matter:

There's no usual time for you to start ovulating again and for your periods to resume. It varies from woman to woman.

If you are breastfeeding, you may ovulate as early as nine weeks or 10 weeks after giving birth. Your period would then start two weeks later, as early as 11 weeks or 12 weeks after giving birth. Or it may be over a year before you start ovulating again, and your periods return.

The average time it takes for breastfeeding mums to become fertile and start their periods again is about six months.

You're more likely to get your periods back sooner if:

Your baby is sleeping for more than four hours at a time during the day, or is sleeping for more than six hours at a time at night.
Your baby has begun to eat solid foods.
You are supplementing some breastfeeds with formula milk or water.
Your baby uses a dummy.
Your baby is feeding less often during the day, and for less time at each feed.

Your periods are less likely to return if:

You're feeding your baby often during the day, without giving her extra fluids or solids.
Your baby uses your breast for comfort sucking, as well as feeding.
You carry your baby close to you in a sling or carrier during the day.

When your periods return also depends on the level of the hormone progesterone in your body. If you have lower levels of progesterone, you're likely to get your periods back earlier than mums with higher levels. So it's possible that you could be breastfeeding around the clock, but still become fertile and start your periods again.

So with these informations, I guess I now understand why I started having my period at this stage far along after giving birth and it's just normal added I had exceeded the six months average time. I am just worried having it back will result in losing my milk but then on after reading this other article, somewhat it gave me knowledge about breastfeeding while having your period.

Got some of these details from the page to share:

Breastfeeding, however, suppresses menstruation at least for a while. For some mothers, there may be an absence of menstruation for weeks, months, and even years while still breastfeeding. Some mothers will even need to completely wean before they see their first period. Others, once their babies begin taking supplemental foods or sleeping longer periods at night, will see the first period. Once menstruation returns it may continue to be irregular during lactation.

When menstruation does return, you should consider yourself fertile and take precautions against pregnancy if desired. Some women consider their first period as their "warning period" that they are now capable of becoming pregnant. However, it IS possible to become pregnant before the first period returns, although quite rare.

The return of menstruation does not mean the end of breastfeeding. The milk does not sour or "go bad" when you are having a period. The milk is no less nutritious when you are menstruating than when you are not. Some women do notice a temporary drop in milk supply in the days just prior to a period and for a few days into one. This is due to hormonal fluctuations. Once the period begins and hormone levels begin to return to normal, the milk supply will boost back up again. Most babies can compensate well for this temporary drop in supply with more frequent nursing.

Nipple tenderness occurs for some women during ovulation, during the days before a period, or at both times. Some mothers report a feeling of antisiness while nursing at these times, too. As with the drop in supply this is also hormonally influenced and therefore temporary.

Some babies may detect a slight change in the taste of the milk just before a period, again, due to hormonal changes. These same babies may nurse less often or less enthusiastically during this time as a result.

So with these informations, I now understand that having my period back will not decrease my milk supply nor lose it as that were really my worries that's also why I still don't want to have my periods back :) and that I also thought that while on exclusive breastfeeding, you will not yet have your period.

Thanks be to God for these things, I was enlightened... I'm thankful that I am able to breastfeed my precious one until now, so blessed. I love my baby so much and that I will always do what is best for him.

"A dip in your milk supply just before you start your period is normal. Don't worry. It will come back up!" I love this quote =)
