Roseola Infantum

Just an update with my previous post about teething and fever. As recap, last Thursday morning, my baby suddenly had high fever ranging from 102 to around 104°F. Every 4 hours I gave him paracetamol to help lower his temperature but it only subsides for a short time and then again back to being high, this lasted for two days. The 3rd day, he woke up feeling better but still had slight fever in the afternoon and temperature went up a bit high again early Sunday morning but totally been back to normal the rest of the day.

We visited the doctor Thursday night, everything went fine so the doctor told us that having sudden high fever might be due to Roseola that will appear within 3-4 days after the fever. And since baby's around 9 months, it usually comes at this stage up to 2 years of age. I actually thought that it might be due to teething only since I've read that it can also be associated with high fever but this Monday morning, few pink-red rash started to appear on his skin especially on his face, neck, tummy, hands and legs.

Pink-red raised rash started on his face

Same on his right leg

I am writing this post to share the experiences I had as a Mom through this milestone. Hope somehow, might help those Moms who will encounter this kind of situation with their baby in the future and could somehow ease your worry.

I have made additional research and these were all the informations I had read:

As the Mayo Clinic says, this “generally mild infection is extremely common.”

Roseola, sometimes called Sixth Disease or baby measles, is characterized by a high fever, followed by a pink-red raised or flat rash.

The rash often appears as the fever is breaking, covering the child’s neck, face, arms, and legs and turns white when touched, says KidsHealth a project of Nemours, dedicated to improving children’s health.

This viral infection appears most often in between six months and two of age.

Suffering from a high fever, often over 103 degrees Fahrenheit, from 3-6 days, the rash will arrive later lasting from a few hours to a few days.

Along with a fever and rash, the child might also experience fatigue, irritability, decreased appetite, mild diarrhea, and swollen eyelids, says the Mayo Clinic.

However, in severe cases a fever can cause seizures. As KidsHealth says, “The fast-rising fever that comes with roseola triggers febrile seizures (convulsions caused by high fevers) in about 10-15 percent of young children.”

Similarly, the Mayo Clinic says, “Although frightening, fever-related seizures in otherwise healthy young children are generally short-lived and are rarely harmful.”

I've also read that it is spread by nasal or throat droplets of those infected with roseola, this very infection is highly contagious. However, once the rash appears, it is much less contagious says the Mayo Clinic. Unlike the chickenpox or other common infections, roseola is unpreventable.

And that unfortunately, since roseola is a virus and not a bacteria is cannot be cured with antibiotics, says the Mayo Clinic.

Instead, the best cure is rest, increased fluid intake to prevent dehydration, and lukewarm sponge baths to ease the fever. The best liquids to serve are flat ginger ale or lemon-lime soda, water, and Gatorade or other drinks packed with electrolytes, says the Mayo Clinic.

Most children will acquire roseola and once they catch it, the best cure is time.

Now I know why baby was that cranky, clingy to his Dad and irritable. Thankful above all of these things, he still was able to have a good appetite and still manage to play on his own. Such a happy fella. :)

Evening came, rashes appeared on his tummy

Left hand

He was sleeping when I was writing this post :)

Just woke up, hello there! I'm doing great! :)

Glad the fever's over. As read, in a couple of days, this rash will go away. Somewhat, I felt a sense of relief knowing it was just roseola. Thanks be to God!

Just an update: The rashes were almost clear by Wednesday and then by Thursday all gone.  So with the case of my baby, roseola lasted for around one week from the day the fever had started.

Two More Teeth! Fever and Teething

Baby started having fever this morning. It was his second time to have it, previously was just slight. Through all of his vaccines, he never had any maybe because he's on breastfeeding. As read, it contains antibodies and lymphocytes from the mother that helps the baby resist infection and protects him from illnesses. Thanks be to God!
Got his two lower front teeth last early month of June

I was wondering why he was having a fever today. I remember with the first, he just had it like an hour or two in the morning. Those were the days when his bottom front teeth begun to erupt. Right now two more coming through from his upper front teeth and was thinking that it might be the reason. Aside from that, normally he have normal stools but this afternoon it was soft.

Fun time with his elder sister Amber

I knew all the symptoms related to baby teething just like my first, when Amber was having hers, she never had a fever actually. But as some say so, just really wanted to be sure that fever is really associated with it so as a worried Mommy again, I dropped by on Babycenter for some pointers with this matter and this is what I've read:

What not to chalk up to teething

If your baby is suffering from diarrhea, fever, or a runny nose, don't dismiss it as merely a sign of teething, especially if the symptoms persist for more than 24 hours.

Even though plenty of parents swear that these symptoms seem directly related to their child's teething, there's no scientific proof that they are linked. A comprehensive analysis of 78 studies published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood in 2007, for example, found no connection between high fever and teething.

So if your child exhibits diarrhea or fever, call his doctor to rule out anything more serious.

My sparkling whites :)

If fever may not really be related to teething, the reason might also be how he took his bath yesterday as while he was on the bathtub, he keeps on immersing his face on the water trying to play with it. He takes a bath regularly on his bathtub but just only yesterday that he keeps on doing said thing. He enjoys being on water actually, he loves it!

A smile as sweet as spring :)

Right now, already took two doses of paracetamol since this morning. He's a bit moody and sensitive but still manages to smile and play. I'm just keeping an eye on him from time to time taking his temperature. God willing, he'll feel better soon...

"Keep on smiling!" :)

It's Great To Be 8! Thanks be to God!

Time goes by so fast! Baby just turned 8 months old last 4th of July. Thanks be to God!

Happy with Mommy and big Sister Amber <3

For the past month, he was advancing well on his development. With this milestone, can crawl prettily quick, sit up on his own and be able to stand supporting himself on furnitures or sofas. Busy moving here and there that sometimes he'll get minor bumps. Aww! :)

Lately, baby Moses' more on becoming shy to strangers that when you left him with someone, he cries. This had started as early as when he was four months old but overall he's just fine and friendly to interact with especially to those he's familiarized with.

With Sister Tina during our International Thanksgiving last July 7, 2014

I remember at this stage, his big sister Amber was not as active as he was. Maybe it's true as they say that boys move around more than girls. They squirm, kick, and wiggle more, ha,ha!

Had kept this rocking toy for years :)

With this milestone, baby Moses had mastered using his fingers to scoop up a piece of food and place it on his mouth. With his eating habits, he has a very good appetite. Eats whatever food you prepare for him and is not a picky eater. Whenever he sees us eating, he'll cry expressing that he wants to eat, too.

His favorite snacks

Those cute fingers that can now easily grasp even the smallest ones

Loves to eat! :)

This was taken when he was around 7 months, eating his fave biscuit! :)

He's also enjoying picking up whatever objects he sees, just really need to be quick enough to get them out of his mouth. His favorite things were plastics, tissues, and papers. With his two teeth around, can easily bite and chew them out. Ha,ha! When it comes to colors, I've observed that he is more interested on red colored ones maybe because of its brightness.

Also at this stage, he started to differentiate his moods and emotions. Cries when he see me leaving, smiles when his Dad arrived from work or when he sees his big sister got home from school.Just hearing our voices quickly grabs his attention. You will see him jumping, eyes widening with excitements, just as happy as he was.
Hey baby, cheer up! =)

When it comes to daily activities, he loves jumping the most so we bought him a Jumperoo. Also, he's a bit heavy now to be carried when he's jumping a lot! :)  Music, lights and exciting sounds reward him with every jump! But with this, he would still find for something new as they say gifted kids easily get bored and would always look for more activities to keep them entertained.

Enjoys exploring his Jumperoo animal friends :)

Fun time with his big sister and teacher as well, Amber

Study time! :)

Also one of his favorite daily activities is bathing. He loves to play water on his bathtub with his bath time friends.
Yay! With his big sister's Dora mermaid toy :)

Hello there!

Fresh, feeling cool after a nice bath ^_^

Up to present, still he sleep straight through the night, same pattern and nothing change. He loves to sleep that even on daytime, after a few time spent on playing with his toys and watching TV, he easily falls asleep. Also maybe, that's the one factor why he grew up this quick, as they say he measures bigger his age.

Catchin' some Zzzzzzzz at daytime! :)

I always thank God for blessing us such a healthy, wonderful baby. He's also well-loved by many for being such a happy, smiling little fella. :)
