Menstruation While Breastfeeding - Just Got My Period Back!

Yesterday night, had some spotting. I thought it was like what I had 3 weeks back but this morning, it continued just like that of a normal period. So I can say, it's back now... Thanks be to God! Glad no more guessing just like last time when I had some spotting if I'm preggo or not. :) To mark this stage, at present, my baby's around 10 months.

I was a bit surprised as I didn't have any symptoms that it was coming today. Though three weeks back with my spotting, I was not really feeling well and had mistakenly thought that I was preggo due to the symptoms I had though the thought of having my period back also came to my mind.

I also remember that time, my breast milk supply decreased for few days that I was so worried that I am losing my milk but glad it went back to normal after like 2-3 days afterwards. I would love to continue breastfeeding my baby as long as I can, thank God that up to present all is well for both of us when it comes to his milk feedings from me.

I have made some reading about this as I am still on exclusive breastfeeding as I am just wondering though my little one was introduced to solids when he turned exactly six months. I read that's the average time that your period will come back when he is starting to eat solids. Though I can say I am still round the clock of feeding him at daytime, also at night like 2-3 feedings and also no pacifier, I feed him too, for comfort at all times when he needs it and I believed these were some factors that contributes for not having your period back on the other hand.

So to share, these were the details I got about this matter:

There's no usual time for you to start ovulating again and for your periods to resume. It varies from woman to woman.

If you are breastfeeding, you may ovulate as early as nine weeks or 10 weeks after giving birth. Your period would then start two weeks later, as early as 11 weeks or 12 weeks after giving birth. Or it may be over a year before you start ovulating again, and your periods return.

The average time it takes for breastfeeding mums to become fertile and start their periods again is about six months.

You're more likely to get your periods back sooner if:

Your baby is sleeping for more than four hours at a time during the day, or is sleeping for more than six hours at a time at night.
Your baby has begun to eat solid foods.
You are supplementing some breastfeeds with formula milk or water.
Your baby uses a dummy.
Your baby is feeding less often during the day, and for less time at each feed.

Your periods are less likely to return if:

You're feeding your baby often during the day, without giving her extra fluids or solids.
Your baby uses your breast for comfort sucking, as well as feeding.
You carry your baby close to you in a sling or carrier during the day.

When your periods return also depends on the level of the hormone progesterone in your body. If you have lower levels of progesterone, you're likely to get your periods back earlier than mums with higher levels. So it's possible that you could be breastfeeding around the clock, but still become fertile and start your periods again.

So with these informations, I guess I now understand why I started having my period at this stage far along after giving birth and it's just normal added I had exceeded the six months average time. I am just worried having it back will result in losing my milk but then on after reading this other article, somewhat it gave me knowledge about breastfeeding while having your period.

Got some of these details from the page to share:

Breastfeeding, however, suppresses menstruation at least for a while. For some mothers, there may be an absence of menstruation for weeks, months, and even years while still breastfeeding. Some mothers will even need to completely wean before they see their first period. Others, once their babies begin taking supplemental foods or sleeping longer periods at night, will see the first period. Once menstruation returns it may continue to be irregular during lactation.

When menstruation does return, you should consider yourself fertile and take precautions against pregnancy if desired. Some women consider their first period as their "warning period" that they are now capable of becoming pregnant. However, it IS possible to become pregnant before the first period returns, although quite rare.

The return of menstruation does not mean the end of breastfeeding. The milk does not sour or "go bad" when you are having a period. The milk is no less nutritious when you are menstruating than when you are not. Some women do notice a temporary drop in milk supply in the days just prior to a period and for a few days into one. This is due to hormonal fluctuations. Once the period begins and hormone levels begin to return to normal, the milk supply will boost back up again. Most babies can compensate well for this temporary drop in supply with more frequent nursing.

Nipple tenderness occurs for some women during ovulation, during the days before a period, or at both times. Some mothers report a feeling of antisiness while nursing at these times, too. As with the drop in supply this is also hormonally influenced and therefore temporary.

Some babies may detect a slight change in the taste of the milk just before a period, again, due to hormonal changes. These same babies may nurse less often or less enthusiastically during this time as a result.

So with these informations, I now understand that having my period back will not decrease my milk supply nor lose it as that were really my worries that's also why I still don't want to have my periods back :) and that I also thought that while on exclusive breastfeeding, you will not yet have your period.

Thanks be to God for these things, I was enlightened... I'm thankful that I am able to breastfeed my precious one until now, so blessed. I love my baby so much and that I will always do what is best for him.

"A dip in your milk supply just before you start your period is normal. Don't worry. It will come back up!" I love this quote =)

Nice To Be Nine! :)

Happy 9 Months Baby Moses! :)

We love you! <3

Baby Moses just turned nine months old last 4th of August. Thanks be to God!

"Love these glasses!" :)

"Do I look good?"

For the past month, he's becoming increasingly mobile, moving here and there, exploring on his own but cries easily when he see me or his Daddy walks away. :)

Always on the go!

With this milestone, he sits well on the floor unassisted and knows how to balance his body well without falling. Afterwards, he crawls fast when something caught his attention. Added with this, he can also stand well with one hand support or stands on his own for a short time. Cruise around while holding onto furnitures and can walk with few steps when held.

With his rocking toy horse

Such a happy little fella :)

Enjoys playing with his toys

Let's play!

Peeking through the windows (his fave place)

He loves it when you tell him to clap hands, does it with a smile. :) He also loves to play toys and repeatedly drops them for you to pick up. He understands it when you say "no", looks at your hand when you say "give mommy" or cries when you're pretending to go and wave "bye-bye".

Clapping my hands :)

He loves to chew whatever he gets with his hands. With 6 teeth now, almost everything goes on his mouth, yay! :)

Look at those sparkling teeth!

Enjoys chewing tissues as always

"Don't tell my big sister I got her headband..."

"Same with her crown..." :)

Mmmmmm... :)

Just caught a butterfly, yay!

He enjoys to vocalize long babbles and he's increasingly loves to imitate words especially when his big sister Amber plays sound words with him.

"Pa-pa-pa-pa!"

About his social development, he shows preference to certain persons and appears anxious with strangers who tries to hold him.

With Sister Mildred

When it comes to self care, when you gave him a piece of bread, he holds it well and enjoys to eat on his own. Also, he loves to drink on his drinking cup.

Munching some frozen grapes to cool those gums

He loves it!

When he turned 8 months last July

Love my yummy cake!

This noodle taste good! :)

Up to present, when it comes to his sleeping pattern, still he managed to sleep straight through the night that goes from 12-14 hours. What a wonderful long sleep! :)

Ssssh! I'm sleeping... :)

I wonder what he's dreaming about...

At an early stage, he's already familiar with his belongings and always shows curiosity with other objects.

I'm busy.... :)

About his feedings, still I'm on round the clock of exclusive breastfeeding, no formula. But when it comes to solid foods, he is eating a lot and not a picky eater. He really has a good appetite and loves different foods!

Pumped breastmilk for his morning cereals :)

Time really flies so fast! Right now, just want to enjoy every single moment one step at a time. God willing soon, he will be one.

Pregnancy or Period?

Last week (Wednesday), had this slight fever that comes with some fatigue, backaches, dizziness and frequent toilet visits. I remember, I felt the same thing during my early stages of pregnancy with my first that later then followed with a positive test result. Also feeling tired after just a short walk with shortness of breath which on the other way around, felt this with my second pregnancy.

Thursday morning of last week, have been feeling the same way, too. Thinking somewhat that I might be pregnant, I took a test but came out negative.

Friday, have been feeling some minor abdominal cramps and light brown discharge that went through until Saturday. So very light that the discharge only visible when I wipe with a tissue. I was thinking that maybe, I might just be having my period back soon as I never had them since Moses was born as I am on exclusive breastfeeding. Still, some thoughts for pregnancy spotting came to my mind.

Feeling better from Sunday last week up to present. I can say that I just have this pregnancy instinct in mind. :) Hubby noticed that my tummy grew a bit bigger though I must say that just looking at my tummy, you would think that I am pregnant as my baby fats still around after giving birth 9 months passed. From my postpartum pregnancy, I still look 3 months pregnant, so just looking at my belly, don't really have a clue!

August 6, 2014

I just took another test last Wednesday and it came out negative again. Have been wondering here and there, just strange feeling... I've read that breastfeeding will not affect pregnancy results but then on, I've also read that when you are breastfeeding, the hcg is so limited to detect on the urine. Experiences from other moms saying they got negative results but that ended up they're really pregnant.

Maybe, I will just wait and give it more time. Though I might say, I am not yet ready to be pregnant again as it's too early as I just gave birth, but in case, will be happy whatever the result may be and will be thankful knowing another blessing is inside of me.

Right now, just want to be careful with my daily activities and everything. Soon will visit a doctor! So for me to find out what really this is... ;)

Thanks be to God!

JUST AN UPDATE: Had my very first period after giving birth last 29th of August which lasted for around three days. So yes, no more guessing now, it was just a returning menstruation just when my baby is about to turn ten months old.
